Dear Climate Change Sceptics

You have a grounding cold that anchors you to your bed day after day. You go to the doctors for treatment and the problem is quickly solved. However, if there was no possible way of attaining an appointment with professionals, the cold would grow worse and will lead to a more serious disease. Currently, global warming is threatening planet Earth, our home, and if we don’t act now, the beast will only grow.

So, is global warming a myth or reality?

Many will still proclaim that global warming is a hoax, Donald Trump even stated:

“The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”

In other words, according to Trump, global warming only effects the world’s economy. This proves to be complete nonsense. Planet Earth’s temperatures are increasing at a much more rapid rate over a much smaller time frame, resulting in the “havoc of [our] climate system and natural environment” (WWF). The intensity and frequency of hydro-meteorological events such as cyclones, tornadoes, droughts, floods and bushfires has dramatically increased. According to the World Meteorology Organization, the years “2010, 2005 and 1998 ranked as the hottest on record, and the ten warmest years on record have all occurred since 1998.” We are the leading cause of this invisible monster. There is a definite correlation between the amount of carbon dioxide and other gases as such that we input in our atmosphere, and the global temperature. Since the Industrial Revolution, carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere have been escalating at an alarming rate. This has a mirroring impact with the global temperatures. It is evident that our actions have now come with reactions, and we are the generation that is paying for the consequences.

Carbon dioxide concentration has such a close correlation with the Earth’s temperatures because the gases we input in the atmosphere result in the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect. This is described as the build-up of atmospheric gases that form a blanket underneath the thin and fragile ozone layer. As the sun’s ultra violet rays beam down to the Earth’s surface, they bounce back and try to escape into outer space. However, the gas blanket traps the rays in our atmosphere which then causes our global temperature to increase. This is all evidence that we are the cause of global warming, and we have to fix our mistakes starting by dramatically reducing our greenhouse gas input in our atmosphere.

Right in our backyard, global warming effects the famous Great Barrier Reef in Northern Queensland. It is said to be the “World’s first ecosystem to collapse” (DailyGalaxy). The dire peril of one of Earth’s most touristic, magical and unique places is directly linked to global warming. The demonic phenomenon doesn’t only increase the temperature of the atmosphere, but also our oceans. The reefs need a certain temperature to survive, however, with the warming of their environment, the reef is rapidly dying. There are countless other events that will

occur in the near future due to global warming. One of the most common and alarming events that will impact the world as a whole is the rising sea levels. We already have hundreds of thousands of political refugees but Huffington Post states that 50 million people will be forced to migrate to higher ground by 2020.

We are the generation our endangered planet Earth needs. Whether we like it or not, we need to change our ways in order to prevent such catastrophe from happening. Global warming is a cruel beast threatening our species and our home into extinction. If we don’t make a change now, who knows where our children, grandchildren and humankind will stand in even less than a century. Now, let me ask you again is global warming a myth or a reality? The choice is in our hands.
